Thank you for the interview. I am one of the Texas old school players likely to play a match or two with Danny Friedman in early December possibly. I appreciate the conversation, especially the discussion of how to explore ways to enhance or incentivize the brewing space in old school. Since you asked for some input, I thought that one way to give some breathing room to alternate strategies or just more fringe or thematic builds, would be to put a cap on the total number of restricted cards used in a deck for an event. It could be like 9 cards, for instance, to include the P9 for anyone that just has to have that. Along with that, a 2nd Tier of cards that were previously restricted (Copy Artifact, Maze of Ith, Regrowth, Fork, Berserk, Workshop, etc.) could be used as 4-of, but they would count against the total restricted card list. Mishra’s Factory and Strip Mine could be added to that 2nd tier list as well. I feel like this could be a good way to limit the all-good-stuff piles without resorting to shaming someone or telling them they CAN’T play certain cards. Players could still use the 4 strips or whatever, but they would have to make choices about that, instead of having them as auto-includes. Just a suggestion, and you can consider the source if you like. After all, I typically play those @#^##y mono-green decks:)

Thanks for the comment! These are good ideas, and I would love to hold a tournament with guidelines like these at some point. Or a local meetup of some sort at least. I think they are not quite strong enough to get the environment we want for this tourney though. Also I think that the decks will be “bad” enough that they are gonna need all the help they can get from the restricted cards (except for Mind Twist and Library.)
